Maine Wine Trail

June 13th, 2010 . by admin

What comes to mind when you think of a Maine?  The rocky coast? Mountains?  Lobster? Seals, whales and puffins?  How about wineries?  Probably not.  Yet Maine has 15 wineries, the majority of which are located along that rocky coast.  Summer is a great time to plan a Maine vacation including a trip along the Maine Wine Trail and the Sebasco Harbor Resort in Sebasco Maine makes a great home base for exploring Midcoast Maine and making a scenic day trip along the Maine Wine Trail.

The Maine Wine Trail stretches along the coast from Portland to Bar Harbor with three wineries located more inland in Lebanon, S. Casco, and Stetson.  A variety of wines are produced in Maine from fruit wines to grape and sparkling wines, as well as hard ciders, mead wines and distilled spirits.

With 7 wineries concentrated in the area, Mid Coast Maine is a great spot to focus your travels.  The area is home to a variety of well know full-service resorts, which offer a perfect home base for your travels.

The Cellardoor Winery is located in Lincolnville, just five miles from Camden Harbor.  The home for the winery and vineyard is a sixty-eight acre farm with a rich history and majestic views to Levenseller Mountain in the distance. The new owners bought the farm in 2007 becoming just the fourth owner of the property in the past century. With two tasting rooms, loft, gourmet kitchen,  and beautiful grounds, the Cellardoor brings the winery experience to the Midcoast of Maine.

Located at DayBreak Manor Estate, the DayBreakVineyard overlooks Wiscasset’s enchanting harbor. With a bit for all interests and only a few blocks from the center of the village, DayBreak is worth a visit. The beautiful village of Wiscasset is located on Rte 1, just between Bath and Boothbay Harbor. Wiscasset is well known for its antique stores, museums, grand homes and welcoming waterfront. DayBreak offers a cabernet savignon, savignon blanc, and zinfandel, as well as a tasting room in which to test them out.

Oyster River Winegrowers in Warren, Maine, specializes in aromatic white wines.  The cool climate wines of Germany, Austria and the Alsace region of France inspire Brian Smith, the winemaker. In the vineyard, Brian uses organic and biodynamic methods, which he believes creates the highest quality grapes, and therefore, high quality wine. He sees his work with the vines as equally important as his work with wine.

The Winterport Winery in Winterport, Maine offers a variety of fruit wines.  Pear, strawberry, blueberry, apple, cranberry, blackberry are all used to produced exceptional wines – many of which have been awarded medals.  What began is a hobby, blossomed into a thriving family business.  It is worth a visit.

So why not enrich your visit to Maine with a day or two of sampling the local vintages?  It makes a fabulous day trip and outing.  And the rocky coast of Maine is never far away.
