Maine Geography

May 18th, 2010 . by admin

Where are you heading for your summer vacation?  Mountains?  Shore?  Lakes?  Can’t decide?  Well maybe you don’t have to. With its unique and varied terrain (its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, and its heavily forested interior), Maine provides vacation options like no other area.  Maine resorts cater to a variety of individual interests, so a Maine vacation maybe just what you need this summer.

Maine is not only the most northern of the New England states, it is the largest, accounting for nearly half of the area’s land mass. Maine is bordered to the south and east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and northeast by New Brunswick, a province of Canada. The Canadian province of Quebec lies to the northwest and the state of New Hampshire to the south and west.

Maine’s  Moosehead Lake is the largest lake located completely in New England. Thoreau spent time here and his writings describe a number of other Maine lakes, such as South Twin Lake.  Mount Katahdin is both the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which extends to Springer Mountain, Georgia, and the southern terminus of the new International Appalachian Trail which, when complete, will run to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Maine is equally well known for its ocean scenery, with almost 3,500 miles (5,600 km) of shoreline. West Quoddy Head is the easternmost piece of land in the contiguous 48 United States. Along the famous rock-bound coast of Maine are lighthouses, beaches, fishing villages, and thousands of offshore islands, including the Isles of Shoals, which straddle the New Hampshire border. Jagged rocks and cliffs and thousands of bays and inlets add to the rugged beauty of Maine’s coast.

If you are looking for accommodations in Maine, Sebasco Harbor Resort in Sebasco, Maine offers a family friendly resort on 550 oceanfront acres on the scenic coast of Maine. The hotel is an authentic Maine vacation resort with breathtaking views and a wealth of activities the entire family can enjoy. You can pamper yourself in their full-service waterfront spa, unwind in a comfortable spa suite, spend a night in a romantic Lighthouse, or relax in one of their lovely Maine cottages.
